Video conference Teachers and Trainers for the Future: Towards a ‘New Normal’ to be held on 29 June 2020

A video conference entitled Teachers and Trainers for the future: Towards a ‘New Normal’ will be held on 29 June 2020 as part of the Croatia’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union with more than 1,400 participants.

Teachers and trainers, their work, role and importance have been among key priorities of the Croatia’s presidency. 

Their dedicated work in new circumstances caused by the COVID-19 pandemic further stressed that teachers are the driving force of every society dedicated to progress.

The discussion among experts from Sweden, France, Finland, Check Republic, Portugal, Ireland, Germany, Australia, UK, European Commission and Croatia, will be based on the Council Conclusions on European Teachers and trainers for the future and the Council Conclusions on Countering the COVID-19 Crisis in Education and Training adopted during the Croatia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union.

The conference will be opened by Prof. Blaženka Divjak, PhD, Minister of Science and Education of the Republic of Croatia and Ms Mariya Gabriel, Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth of the European Commission. Introductory presentations on the challenges faced by teachers and trainers, and changes in education due to the COVID-19 pandemic will be given by Mr Andreas Schleicher, OECD and Mr Pasi Sahlberg, Sydney University.

It will be followed by the ministerial panel with Minister Divjak, Mr. Jean-Michel Blanquer, Minister of Education and Youth of the French Republic, Ms. Anna Ekström, Minister of Education of the Kingdom of Sweden, Mr. Václav Velčovský, Vice-Minister of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, and Ms Themis Christophidou, Director-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture. The panel will be moderated by Ms. Lidija Kralj, Assistant Minister of Education and Science of the Republic of Croatia.

In the second part, the conference will address changes related to the pedagogical context, role of teachers and trainers, as well as digital challenges of the ‘new normal’ in the fields of higher education, general education, vocational education and training.
