The Croatian Presidency of the Council of the EU held today an informal videoconference of EU ministers responsible for space to discuss how to enhance the impact of space-based solutions on our society, environment and economy.

The videoconference chaired by Blaženka Divjak, Minister of Research and Education of the Republic of Croatia was also attended by the EU Commissioner for internal market, Thierry Breton.

Ministers broadly reiterated that regardless of the need for appropriate action against the COVID-19 pandemic, the transition to a sustainable and climate neutral economy remains a priority.

Ministers considered that EU space-based technologies can offer solutions for the quick recovery from the COVID-19 crisis and for building a more resilient society. They recalled the role of the space sector in addressing key challenges, such as depletion of natural resources, climate change and pandemics mitigation.

Views were exchanged on the opportunities that the space sector offers for economic growth and sustainable development. Ministers stressed the importance of EU space data and services in fostering a green recovery in Europe after the COVID-19 crisis.

“The resilience of European critical value chains, like the space industry, is vital for our economy. The EU space flagships contribute to the twin digital and green transitions, as well as to strengthening EU’s resilience and autonomy.  We will support this with increased targeted support for the EU aerospace ecosystem to boost investments and competitiveness.  By reinforcing our strategic autonomy in space, we can realise our potential to innovate for the future.”
Thierry Breton, Commissioner for internal market

“We are facing rapid changes in the overall environment and climate that nobody even thought about a few decades ago. Europe can remain strong and long term sustainable if we manage to build a strong and resilient society, agile enough to react to the challenges facing us, as well as to maintain our global leadership in efforts to achieve a climate neutral economy.”

Blaženka Divjak, Minister of Research and Education of the Republic of Croatia

Finally, Minister Divjak used the opportunity to thank all Member States for their contribution, support and recognition of the importance of the topic, what allowed finalizing the Council conclusions on Space for a sustainable Europe that will be adopted through a written procedure.
